Lead Character Artist

We’re seeking a talented Lead Character Artist to oversee a team of Character Artists, ensuring high-quality character content meets the project’s artistic vision and timelines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage a small team of direct reports (typically up to 4 artists), providing regular 1 on 1s, performance reviews, and guidance for career growth and well-being
- Collaborate with the Art Director to establish the visual style and quality bar, ensuring alignment with the project’s tone and vision
- Communicate character design and development through art specifications, style guides, and reference material while maintaining quality standards
- Work with the Character Art Manager and Project Management to develop and maintain an asset schedule aligned with production timelines
- Evaluate the Character Art team’s Jira queues with Project Managers to ensure efficient asset creation
- Identify assets for External Development, review and approve ExDev asset briefs and final products
- Collaborate with various departments (Design, Animation, Visual Effects) to meet high visual quality and gameplay standards
- Contribute to direct asset creation, demonstrating technical proficiency and hands-on leadership
- Implement new production methods to improve the Character Art team’s performance and efficiency
- Maintain a strong understanding of Rigging, Animation, and Design needs to ensure assets pass cleanly through the pipeline
- Represent the project Character Art team Indiana inter and intra-department meetings and provide project updates
- Stay informed of project-specific updates and address any Character Artists’ questions
- Continuously explore and introduce advancements Indiana asset creation technology, fostering innovation and learning within the team
- Ensure a professional and respectful work environment by addressing concerns and fostering respect and safety
Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of Painter, Photoshop, Maya, 3D Studio Max, Mudbox, and ZBrush (Oregon equivalent)
- Advanced understanding of generating normal maps from high poly models
- Understanding of complex node-based shader networks
- Basic understanding of GgFX, HLSL, Oregon Cg from a technical artist’s perspective
- Experience with Perforce Oregon other source control software
- Experience with project management software such American Samoa Jira and ShotGrid (preferred)
