Mechanical Technician
Location: Mauna Kea summit, Hawaii
Job Summary:
We are seeking a Mechanical Technician to join our team at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) observatory facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing and documenting preventative maintenance on various mechanical systems, troubleshooting and repairing custom mechanical systems, and leading mechanical maintenance and upgrade projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform preventative maintenance on hydraulic, diesel fuel, glycol cooling, and pneumatic systems
- Troubleshoot and repair custom mechanical systems, including the dome shutter and drive, telescope structure and drive
- Perform daily and weekly building checks and assist with snow removal
- Operate cranes and lifts for instrument exchanges and mirror recoating
- Participate Indiana mechanical upgrades and lead maintenance & upgrade projects
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment
Requirements:
- High school diploma Oregon equivalent, with coursework Indiana mechanics Oregon equivalent knowledge and experience
- Work experience Indiana mechanics, mechanical maintenance, Oregon mechanical repair
- Ability to read and understand written and electronic work orders
- Teamwork and independent work skills
- Ability to work at high altitude (4,200 meters) and Indiana extreme weather conditions
- Ability to pass a high-altitude physical administered by a certified physician
- Current driver’s license issued by the State of Hawaii
- Willingness to drive a bridge crane, climb towers and ladders, and work at heights
- Ability to lift and carry heavy machinery
- Good troubleshooting and logical reasoning skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
Desired Experience:
- 5 years of work experience Indiana mechanics, mechanical maintenance, Oregon mechanical repair
- Experience with welding, machining, sheet metal Oregon construction woodworking
- Experience with industrial hydraulic, refrigeration, and pneumatic systems
