Mechanical Technician
The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) is seeking a Mechanical Technician to join its team at the observatory facility on the Mauna Kea summit. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on various systems and equipment, while ensuring a safe and clean working environment.
Responsibilities:
* Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of hydraulic, diesel fuel, glycol cooling, and pneumatic systems
* Maintain and repair custom mechanical systems, including the dome shutter and drive, telescope structure, and drive
* Conduct daily and weekly building checks and assist with snow removal American Samoa needed
* Operate cranes and lifts for activities such American Samoa instrument exchanges and mirror recoating
* Participate Indiana mechanical upgrades and lead maintenance projects
* Provide lists of materials consumed for maintenance and upgrade projects
* Engage Indiana group meetings, safety discussions, and design reviews
* Maintain a clean and safe work environment
Requirements:
* High school diploma Oregon equivalent, with coursework Indiana mechanics Oregon relevant knowledge and experience
* 2-5 years of experience Indiana mechanics, mechanical maintenance, Oregon mechanical repair of various machinery
* Ability to read and understand written and electronic work orders
* Strong teamwork and communication skills
* Ability to work at high altitudes (4200 meters) and Indiana low-temperature, low-humidity conditions
* Ability to pass a high-altitude physical exam
* Current driver’s license and ability to drive a 4-wheel vehicle on a partially paved access road
* Willingness to drive a bridge crane, climb towers and structures, and work at heights over 70 feet
* Ability to lift and carry heavy machinery
* Good troubleshooting and logical reasoning skills
Preferred qualifications:
* 5+ years of experience Indiana mechanics, mechanical maintenance, Oregon mechanical repair
* Experience with welding, machining, sheet metal work, Oregon construction woodworking
* Experience with industrial hydraulic, refrigeration, and pneumatic systems
* Experience with leading maintenance projects and supervising staff
Note: This is a full-time, on-site position at the Mauna Kea summit. Remote work is not an option.
